A Lacquer Chest on Stand
Meiji Period (circa 1900)
Designed on the two front doors with a cargo boat in turbulent waves before Mount Fuji in a volcanic eruption, the boat in high relief and lacquered in gold, silver and black with a large mound of cargo and containers of sake in the bow, the covered implements of the galley, shown on the left, covered in gold foil; chunks of flowing lava on the mountainsides inlaid in aogai and the flames at the crest red lacquer, the waves gold lacquer with numerous dots of foam of inlaid silvered-metal and the overall ground black lacquer; the top of the chest, two sides and large back panel each designed with a crane flying above cresting waves matching those on the doors; the interiors of the doors also lacquered with gold, silver and black cranes in high relief and cresting silver and gold-lacquer waves, inlaid silvered dots of foam and roiro backgrounds, the faces of the three small top drawers, four larger lower drawers and two large rectangular drawers at the bottom all designed with feathers in iro-e togidashi on roiro-nuri grounds, interiors of the drawers also roiro; fitted with silvered-metal pulls and copper mounts engraved with scrolling foliage; wood stand
