Lot Essay

The painting was a gift of the artist to John W. Dwyer of San Francisco. Dwyer and Munakata had a long-standing friendship. An accompanying letter, written in February 1968, refers to Munakata's recent visit to Dwyer and expresses his hope for a one-person exhibition in San Francisco. The volcano sketched on the letter is the one Munakata visited on the Big Island, Hawaii.
