Lot Essay

Virupa is one of the eighty four mahasiddhas of the Indo-Tibetan tantric tradition. His upraised right hand recalls the story that he once used his powers to stop the sun so as to avoid paying his tavern bil; compare an earlier bronze sold at Christie's New York, 22 March 2000, lot 58.
