The square table screen with a circular two-sided Dali marble inset, the black inclusions on one side suggesting a scholar's rock, with a painted inscription, the reverse with two birds in flight above a mountain peak, all against a swirled grey background, raised on a trestle support; the framed two-sided Dali marble plaque with dark grey inclusions suggesting a section of mountain on each side, one side inscribed with an inscription, a streaked grey area on the reverse suggesting a waterfall, with brass hanging mount

Lot Essay

The square table screen is signed Youshi shanren and is dated Guihai year, possibly corresponding to 1863, Autumn, Eighth Month, followed by two seals of the artist, You Shi and the other indecipherable.

The two-sided plaque is entitled Yu yu shan qi, which may be loosely translated, 'abundant rain, mountain spirit', and bears the indecipherable signature and seal of the artist.
