Lot Essay

For a discussion of Fujian and Jiangsu Ming-style cabinets with stands, see J. Ang, 'Identifying a Regional Style of Chinese Furniture', Journal of the Classical Chinese Furniture Society, Autumn 1992, pp. 54-63. Compare the huanghuali tapered cabinet with a stand incorporating an upper row of two drawers and a lower single open shelf illustrated by G. W. Bruce in The Dr. S.Y. Yip Collection of Classic Chinese Furniture, Hong Kong, 1991, no. 49, pp. 126-127. See, also, the pair of huanghuali tapered cabinets with fluted corner posts on stands with a single high row of two drawers in the 'Take One Step Back' Studio Collection, included in the exhibition Splendour of Style: Classical Furniture from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and illustrated by C. Evarts in the Catalogue, National History Museum, Taipei, 1999, pp. 160-161.
