Lot Essay

No other pair of famille verte triple-gourd vases of this exact pattern appears to be published. Compare a smaller, famille verte double-gourd vase (17½ in.) which has a ruyi collar band on the lower bulb, similar to the bands on the upper and lower bulbs of the present lot, sold in these rooms, 4 June 1987, lot 291.

For other examples of triple-gourd vases of this same impressive size, but with different decoration, see the pair decorated in gilt, copper red and mirror black, from The Eugene O. Perkins Collection of Qing Porcelain, sold in these rooms, 2 June 1989, and another decorated in gilt, famille verte and mirror black, from the Estate of Ludmila Piogey, Duchesse De Caylus, also sold in these rooms, 16 September 1998, lot 385.
