Holding was amongst the first to become well-known in toy car collecting circles. Before the hobby became popular, information was hard to come by. In October 1963, a new magazine, "Model Roads and Racing", appeared in English model shops dealing mainly with scale modelling and slot racing circuits. In January 1964, it carried the first article devoted to the diecast collector, "Collecting Miniatures" by G.P. Holding. Among the topics covered were 'How to Start', 'How Much?'. 'How Many?' and the inevitable 'Why?'. He encouraged swapping and exchanging with overseas collectors whose addresses could be found in the magazine. Mr Holding followed his own advice to good effect and over many years, built up a wide and varied collection of models from all corners of the world. In 1965, the Italian collectors' magazine, 'Quatroruotine', carried profiles of some of the internationally famous collectors of the day. G.P. Holding was the first English collector so honoured. For all that he was so involved in getting the hobby off the ground, he kept a very low profile himself. Although he must have attended swapmeets, he did not make himself known to us. We corresponded with him, sent and received information, but in over 30 years of collecting, we never knowingly met him. Collecting can be a very private matter. The final paragraph of his January 1964 article sums the hobby up and is as relevant today as it was then. It reads: "To readers already addicted to this hobby, and who share my enthusiasm, there is far more left unwritten but of which they can have an understanding knowledge; to those on the brink I can only say, come on in, you will never fully understand until you have participated." Introduction When Mr Holding died last year, aged 77, all his models were carefully packed away in boxes or cupboards in his house. In a previous home he had also kept many of his models stored away in their original boxes, but quite a large number were out on display. As Mr Holding was a smoker, these models became covered with a very fine matt film of nicotine and dust. In our opinion, having carefully removed this film in many cases, neither it nor sunlight have caused any visible discoloration to the paintwork of these models in most cases. Overall, the collection is still remarkable for its freshness and quality. Its extraordinary breadth and diversity is a tribute to his love of the hobby and his foresight. The greater part of the models are offered in their original boxes, but in most cases they are illustrated without boxes. TEKNO
