Lot Essay
The present lot is an addition to the oeuvre of the artist, of whom nothing is known. Only three other works by him are recorded, all chimney-pieces depicting bouquets of flowers in vases: the first of 1785 was sold at Mak van Waay Amsterdam, 10 May 1971, lot 35, ill.; the second of 1787 was sold at Christie's London, 24 February 1984, lot 127, ill. and the third was sold at Phillips London, 27 October 1987, lot 71, ill.
As pointed out by C.G.M. Noordam, loc. cit., the present composition is probably based on a watercolour by Jan de Beijer (1703-1780). It shows the Townhall and the IJsselpoort as they were before 1794, when an addition was made to the Townhall. The view of the town is a cappriccio.
