Lot Essay

The palette and style of this painting are typical of Ammi Phillips' early Border Limner period. The mate to this portrait was first sold at Sotheby's New York, Important American Folk Art and Furniture: The Distinguished Collection of the Late Stewart E. Gregory, 27 January 1979, lot 248. It was subsequently included in Christie's New York, Important American Furniture Folk Art and Decorative Arts, Property from the Collection of the Late Albert K. Davidson, 21 October 1995, lot 34.
