The Property of the Heirs of Janet Lee Auchincloss from Hammersmith Farm
"The halls and rooms of the house, as well as the view from them overlooking Narragansett Bay, possess charm, a feeling of dignity and gracious living- both cozy and comforting, and during the summer White House years a feeling of pride and patriotism prevailed. My father always took pleasure in having been born there, and my family and I will forever feel privileged to have grown up at Hammersmith Farm."
---Hugh D. Auchincloss III
Since its construction in 1887, this 28-room shingle style cottage has been a reflection of the taste and lifestyle of its residents. Its informal rooms formed the backdrop for Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy's wedding day, the summer White House, as well as for generations of Auchincloss family memories. For Jacqueline Kennedy, this highly varied collection of European and American decorative art meshed together to become a place "where all is peace and beauty and where one leaves another person-so happy and ready to begin again." Christie's is honored to offer the property of Hammersmith Farm on behalf of the heirs of Hugh D. and Janet Lee Auchincloss, thus allowing these objects to continue to play a role in more lives and memories.
