AN UMAYYAD UNGLAZED MOULDED CYLINDRICAL COVER
7TH-8TH CENTURY
With slightly rounded top and vertical sides, the top with two bands of moulded vine scrolls between bands of simpler geometric decoration around a small central rosette, the sides with an inverted arcade containing stylised palmettes between rosette and floral bands, two repaired clean breaks, very small piece inserted to rim from a similar vessel
6¼in. (15.8cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

It is interesting to note on the side of this very finely moulded vessel that a separate smaller arched stamp was used for one of the panels to ensure that there was no overlap between the different motifs.
