The prototype, signed and dated 1656, oil on canvas, 120 x 90.3 cm, has been in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Kassel, since 1732 (W. Sumowski, Gemälde der Rembrandt Schüler, 1983, III, pp.2009 & 2050, fig.1324).
