His pre-Indonesian oeuvre is generally less known. The following lots give a good representation of the different subjects that the artist worked on in the first decades of the 20th century. The majority are from Le Mayeur's period as a war artist during World War I. Le Mayeur had joined the Belgian army in 1916 and became part of a group of 27 war artists. He was stationed in the region of Lo and Nieuwpoort in Flanders, where he sketched the effects of the war on the area on large format sheets (50 x 65 cm) in lively colours (see lots 40, 43. 47, 48, 49, 51 and 52). Another group of works date from the 1920's and early 1930's when the artist travelled extensively. In 1920 Le Mayeur went to Morocco, Algeria and Tunesia. Lots 38 and 46 are typical examples of the type of pastels in strong colours from his North African period. In 1920 and 1930 the artist travelled to India. For further information, see J. Ubbens and C. Huizing, Adrien Jean le Mayeur de Merprès, 1995.
