Lot Essay

Lavery visited Gordon Coutts and his wife Gertrude in Palm Springs during the summer of 1936. They are depicted in this painting, with Lavery's travelling companions Diana Dickinson and Lilian Millar, and his secretary, Katherine FitzGerald, and his granddaughter, Ann Forbes-Sempill.
