FIRST EDITION. "This classic treatise, when complete, is very scarce, partly because it was irregularly issued over a period of 17 years." (McGill/Wood). "This work and Schlegel's Kritische Übersicht der Europäischen Vögel, 1844...appear to be rivals for the honor of constituting the earliest work in which trinimial nomenclature is used in the modern conception for geographic races of species" (Ayer/Zimmer). Siebold (1796-1866), a German physician, natural scientist and orientalist, entered the service of the V.O.C. and spent seven years in Japan between 1823 and 1830, returning later between 1859 and 1862. His wide-ranging studies added enormously to European knowledge of the country. Ayer/Zimmer 592; Copenhagen/Anker 504; McGill/Wood 568; Nissen IVB 877; Nissen ZBI 3848. (4)
