In the above match played on 25th May 1977, at the Olympic Stadium, Rome, before 57,000 spectators, Liverpool defeated Borussia Moenchengladbach 3-1, Neal scoring one goal. On their way to the final, Liverpool defeated The Crusaders 7-0 on aggregate; Trabzonspor 3-1 on aggregate; St. Etienne 3-1 on agregate; and in the semi-final, defeated FC Zurich 6-1 on aggregate. Neal played in eight of the nine ties in this years European Cup competition, scoring four goals
An identical medal awarded to Neal's colleague Ray Kennedy was sold Christie's Scotland Ltd, Lot 87, 20th October 1993, for £16,000
