In the fall of 1933 Julien Levy presented the exhibition Photographs by Henri Cartier-Bresson at his 602 Madison Avenue gallery. This was the young Frenchman's first New York show. Cartier-Bresson's work was juxtaposed with an exhibition of newspaper images and film stills. Two years later in the spring of 1935 Cartier-Bresson was included by Levy in Documentary and Anti-Graphic Photographs by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans and Manuel Alvarez Bravo. (Schaffner and Jacobs, Julien Levy: Portrait of an Art Gallery, pp. 128-129.)
Prints of images by Cartier-Bresson from the 1930s are considered very rare. It is possible that the print offered here was acquired by Levy during the years 1933-35.
