A MAGNIFICENT VERMEIL AND TOURMALINE EAGLE PENDANT, CHANEL
The sculpted eagle studded with oval, rectangular, circular and marquis faceted multicolored tourmalines, centering an oval cabochon tourmaline, 4.5 in., with French hallmarks
Signed Chanel
This massive pendant is similar in design to the large 5th Century fibula in the shape of an eagle, that is in the De Clerq collection in Paris. "One morning in 1965 I woke up and opened an art book and saw a photo of an antique eagle. Mlle. Chanel had given me so many stones-tourmalines, aquamarines, sapphires and others, I decided to set these stones in bezels instead of using garnets or molten glass. I made several eagles in various sizes of necklaces, brooches, bracelets and rings."
