Lot Essay

Karl Raupp earned the nickname 'Chiemsee-Raupp' after visiting the Chiemsee and the Frauninsel an island located in this Bavarian lake in 1869. This island and surrounding body of water were the motivation for the present work, and the inspiration for many others produced throughout his lifetime. Raupp's obsession with the Chiemsee and boating subjects on this lake eventually led to his establishment of the Frauninsel colony of artists.
