September shows part of the garden at Kellie Castle, Fife which from 1878, became the Lorimer family retreat and was to provide both pleasure and inspiration for the whole family. The garden was designed by the artist's brother Sir Robert when he was only sixteen, while John Henry was to paint many scenes depicting both the castle's interior and its surroundings. The painting shows an area of the garden for which the artist retained from memories as he recalled "....Robert designed the long garden with the circular centre for which I found an astroball with a ship on top. He converted that part, overloaded it with gooseberries into an orderly and statly place...." (Christopher Hussey, The work of Sir Robert Lorimer, 1931, p.151.)
Kellie Castle, Fife had been the seat of the Earls of Kellie until their line died out in 1829, after which it was abandoned. Professor James Lorimer, father of Sir Robert and John Henry, was decended from David Kellie of Dundee (1725-1775), from whom his inheritance enabled him to lease Kellie Castle and carry out its extensive restoration.
