Lot Essay

The present work forms part of the cathedral series that occupied Philipson from the early 1960s. 'The first cathedral paintings were exteriors. What impressed me about cathedrals like Rouen and Amiens was the powerful tracery seen from outside and the sense of ascending' (see Robin Philipson, Royal College of Art Exhibition Catalogue, Edinburgh, 1989, p. 12). He went on to focus on cathedral interiors, concentrating on elements such as the alter and crucifix in later works.
