Lot Essay

From 1950 onwards Joan Eardley divided her time between Glasgow and the Kincardineshire village of Catterline, just south of Stonehaven. In 1956 she took up semi-residence in this small fishing community. The artist's Catterline subjects are notable for her use of expressive brushstrokes and thick paint to convey the force of the sea and wind.
