Mrs. Hanna Lifshutz and the late Simon Lifschutz were the founder members of the Vitrum Studios in Bombay. Simon Lifschutz lived in India for twenty-one years, during which time he revived industrial glass-making. In 1957 he set up the Vitrum Studios as an off-shoot of that business and as a product of his interest in Indian art. These were the first studios in India to encourage young artists to work in ceramics and mosaics to create affordable work in an Indian idiom. They offered artists a livelihood and the freedom to develop their own style. Any artist was welcome to visit and work or teach there; prominent among them were K.H. Ara, K.K. Hebbar and Badrinarayan.
