Production of the Nikkor-S 50mm. f/1.4 lens began in December 1950, although the design was completed the previous May. According to Rotoloni, two early batches were produced during the Japanese Occupation, each with its own serial number scheme. The first batch began with the prefix 5005 (signifying the fifth month of 1950 as the design completion date) with recorded numbers ranging from 50050001 to 50051987. This batch of serial numbers was revised shortly before the end of the Occupation, and a new series introduced beginning with number 316000, possibly in late 1951.
