Two daguerreotypes, one sixth-plate and one quarter-plate, hand-coloured, one with gilt pin-prick jewellery decoration, arched-top and oval gilt-metal mounts, one with small ink manuscript paper label with sitters' names on cover glass, folding morocco cases (one with top section missing) each with photographer's gilt credit stamp (2)

Lot Essay

J.W. Newland established a daguerreotype studio in Australia in 1848-9 and moved to Calcutta in 1850, where he remained until 1860. This portrait is unusual in showing a European man and Indian woman in the traditional husband-and-wife pose.
