With sixty-nine cartes-de-visite, three with photographer's credit and date Mayall Fecit, March 1st. 1861 in the negatives, twenty-four cabinet portraits (one trimmed, three signed by sitters) and two larger mounted portraits loosely laid in, pre-cut arched top window mounts, gilt borders, occasional pencil captions or dates in a later hand on mounts, title page printed in gilt Photographic Album with printed index (blank) on verso, green morocco spine titled Album, tortoise-shell covers with gilt metal straps and bosses, gilt metal clasp (inner hinges repaired), g.e., 12 x 9¾ in.

Lot Essay

Portraits of the young prince, Queen Victoria's youngest son (b. 1853), with his brother Arthur and sister Louise. Photographed at Windsor in Highland dress, with his tutor, J. Wickham Legg, in fancy dress, military dress, reading, with his dogs including two portraits of Waldmann, the later pages including portraits of his wife, Princess Helen, their daughter, Alice (b. 1883) and son, Charles Edward, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (b. 1884). Four of the latter with signatures in ink Helen, Charles Edward, Alice Cannes 1891, Helen, Charles Edward, Alice 1889, Alice Cannes April 9th 1898, and Charles Edward, the last two signed by the children themselves.
