Lot Essay

Human Nature, subtitled A Monthly Record of Zoistic Science and Intelligence, Embodying Physiology, Phrenology, Psychology, Spiritualism, Philosophy, The Laws of Health, and Sociology was a journal containing texts by various theosophists, lecturers and authors. These journals include carte-de-visite portraits depicting 'spirits' alongside the sitters. Human Nature Vol.VIII includes Mumler's renowned picture of Mrs. Lincoln seated in front of the ghostly image of her son Abraham Lincoln, the assassinated US President, as well as a portrait of Moses A. Dow alongside a spirit.
