Lot Essay

Mary Arnold (Mrs. Humphrey Ward) was the grand-daughter of Thomas Arnold (1795 - 1842) the famous headmaster of Rugby School who held enormous influence on public school education in England. The Julia in the inscription was Mary Arnold's sister.
