Surmounted by a rouge griotte marble top, the carcass stamped four times G. DURAND, above a frieze with scrolling foliage, centred by a female mask flanked to each side by a goat, above a pair of cupboard doors, the interior fitted with an adjustable shelf, flanked to each side by a fluted tapering column, on four fluted toupie feet, the back stamped twice G. DURAND

Lot Essay

Specialising in the production of 18th century style furniture of the finest quality, Gervais-Maximillien-Eugène Durand (b. 1839) worked from a number of workshop locations in Paris during the last quarter of the 19th century. With his son Frédéric-Louis joining him in around 1890, the firm altered its name to Durand et Fils.

Three side cabinets of this model, by Adam Weisweiler, were part of the Peter Jay Sharp Collection, sold Sotheby's New York, 13 January 1994, lot 36.
