The oval moulded hinged top enclosing a lead-lined interior, the tapering sides with brass bands to the top and bottom and with carrying handles on an oval stand with four square tapering legs, brass caps and castors, minor losses to veneer

Lot Essay

Messrs. A. Hepplewhite & Co. provided a pattern for one of these elliptical mahogany 'cellaret' with 'brass hoops lacquered' and a herm-legged stand in The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, London, 1st ed., 1788, pl. 37.
A closely related cellaret was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 26 May 1988, lot 31.
