Each with a rectangular top above a plain breakfront frieze supported by winged lion monopodia, the back concertina-action legs with paw feet, on plinths with sunk castors, lacking the leaves
Each end: 70¼ in. (178.5 cm.) wide; 32¼ in. (82 cm.) high; 23¼ in. (60 cm.) deep, closed

Lot Essay

The sideboard-table, supported in the Roman manner by chimaerical griffin monopodia, was popularised by Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1807, pl. VII. Hope's publication pl.XXVI also provided the source for these chimaera, comprising eagle-winged and ram-horned lions, which originated with a marble antiquity belonging to the Rome-based sulptor Cavaceppi.
