PERKINS, Edith Forbes. Letters and Journal. [Boston]: Printed at the Riverside Press for Private Distribution, 1931. 4 volumes, 8o. Plates. Original cloth, uncut. Personal journal of the wife of Charles Elliott Perkins, one of the founders of the Burlington & Missouri Railroad. One of their sons, Charles Elliot Perkins, was the author of the important western books The Pinto Horse and The Phantom Bull, copies of which are found in the Haley library. Mrs. Perkins was the daughter of Robert Bennett Forbes, who had visited California as early as 1825, and, as a member of both the Perkins and Forbes families had strong ties to Santa Barbara. Mrs. Perkins knew many of the great Westerners of the day, including Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Taft, Buffalo Bill Cody, Charles M. Russell and Edward Borein.
