Lot Essay

Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha reigned as King Leopold I of the Belgians from 1831 to 1865. An outstanding patron of science and education, the "Nestor of Europe" was highly influential in diplomacy, giving his advice, sometimes unsought, to other sovereigns, in particular to his niece Queen Victoria

This gun was originally one of a pair, the case for which was sold from the W. Keith Neal Collection in these Rooms, 8 November 1995, lot 36
