AN IMPORTANT CHARLES II SILVER CANDLE SNUFFERS AND TRAY
London, circa 1685, the tray maker's mark D script (Jackson, 3rd ed., p. 139, line 1); the snuffers maker's mark WB three pellets below
Rectangular with canted corners and on four scroll feet, with molded borders and pierced shaped handle applied with beading, the field flat-chased with chinoiserie scenes depicting a scholar with a young student before a burning brazier in a garden with a pagoda enclosing a fire billowing smoke and a man carrying a flaming pot on his head surrounded by a bridge and wild foliage, all within a matte border, maker's mark struck twice on tray, also with French post-1893 control marks; the snuffers of scissor form, the shaped box flat-chased with warrior holding a shield on one side, and a lady on the other, all within matte borders, maker's mark struck four times inside box, also with French post-1893 control marks

Lot Essay

A similar Chinoiserie snuffers tray and snuffers with the same maker's marks of D script and WB, was sold from the Jaime Ortiz Patiño Collection of 17th Century English Chinoiserie Silver, Sotheby's, New York, May 21, 1992, lot 151.

Another similar tray with snuffers of 1683, maker's marks IH and WB, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and was previously sold from the collection of Lord Astor of Hever at Christie's, London, May 15, 1963, lot 108. A set of 1685, with the tray maker's mark B and the snuffers WB, were sold as part of a service in the collection of the Earl of Harewood, Christie's, London, March 13, 1957. The present example is distinctive in its use of fire and smoke motifs referring to its function.
