Lot Essay

With their distinctive pieds en rouleaux, these fauteuils are clearly inspired by the designs of the ornameniste Nicolas Pineau. A design for a more fully developed Louis XV fauteuil in the Musée des Arts Decoratif, Paris, is illustrated in B.G.B. Pallot, L'Art du Siège au XVIIIe Siècle, Tours, 1987, p. 121. Such pieds en rouleaux were swiftly adopted by menuistes like père Gourdin and Louis Cresson I.
