Blue interlaced L's enclosing date letter U for 1772, painter's marks for Buteux l'aîné and for Drand, incised L
The center with the crowned monogram CL in pink roses and cornflowers, the border with putti in clouds reserved on the white ground within gilt ciselé bands at the top and bottom angles, the side angles with baskets of flowers, the shaped gilt line rim with a further blue enamel band gilt with laurel, edged with gilt foliate scrolls and suspending berried laurel wreaths at the center of each side

Lot Essay

The present sauce-boat stand was made for a service given by Louis XV to Queen Marie-Caroline of Naples and the Two-Sicilies upon the birth of her daughter Charlotte Louise for whom the king stood as godfather. Examples from this service are in the collections of the Louvre and the musée des arts décoratifs. Cf. Versailles et les tables royales en Europe, XVIIème-XIXème siècles, exhibition catalogue, Musée National des Chateaux de Versailles et de Trianon, Paris, 1993, p. 338.

Charles Buteux, l'aîné, recorded 1756-1782 as specializing in figures, trophies and flowers and likely the painter of the putti.

François Drand, recorded 1764-1780 as a painter of ground patterns and flowers and as a gilder and likely the painter of the flower baskets and the laurel wreaths.
