Lot Essay

As pointed out by R. van de Eijnden and A. van der Willigen, Geschiedenis der Vaderlandsche Schilderkunst, III, 1820, p.85, the artist started his career as a landscape painter. As the present lot is dated 1779, it must be one of his earliest candlelight scenes for which he later became famous.
