Lot Essay

As pointed out by L.J. Bol, Die Holländische Marinemalerei des 17. Jahrhunderts, 1973, pp.103/5, the artist's style is close to that of his father Jan. Distinctive is Julius's brushwork to depict surf, evident in the seascape reproduced by Bol, op.cit., p.105, fig.103.
