Lot Essay

In the present lot the indebtness of this Rotterdam master to the Haarlem landscapists, most notably Thomas Heeremans, is evident. Verburgh drew his inspiration directly from Heeremans and he is known to have copied the latter's work, an example of which was offered at Sotheby's London, 6 May 1964, lot 87.
