Lot Essay

The Yongzheng reign is famous for its monochromes, and while many of the glazes were reinventions of the famous Song types, new glazes were also invented, by ceramicists such as Nian Xiyao who is credited with devising the teadust glaze.

A teadust-glazed hu-shaped vase with a Yongzheng mark, slightly smaller than the present lot, is illustrated by S. Jenyns, Later Chinese Porcelain, 1971, pl. CIV, no. 2. Cf. also a Yongzheng crackled celadon-glazed vase of the same shape in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Kangxi Yongzheng Qianlong, 1989, p. 249, pl. 78.
