Lot Essay

Comparable to Esselens' beach scenes like that in the Fondation Custodia, Institut Néerlandais, Paris, Dutch drawings of the 17th Century, exhibition catalogue, New York Paris, 1977-78, no. 37, plate 133, and to a drawing formerly with C.G. Boerner, Düsseldorf. Esselens' beach scenes are also closely comparable to, and sometimes confused with similar scenes by Simon de Vlieger. The latter's etching (Bartsch 10) of figures on a beach shows a very similar composition.
