Lot Essay

The artist was born and died in Dordrecht, and was early on influenced by the work of the Dordrecht artists Abraham and Jacob van Strij. He travelled to Belgium, Luxemburg and Germany in the 1820s and 1830s. His landscapes are of such high quality that they were sometimes confused with those of his contemporary Barend Cornelis Koekkoek (1803-1862), which the high quality of the present lot would seem to confirm.
