Carl Gottlob Rössig (1752-1806)
Les Roses... traduit de l'Allemand par M. de Lahitte.. Die Rosen nach der Natur gezeichnet und colorirt mit kurzen Botanischen Bestimmungen begleitet. Leipzig: Industrie-Comptoir, [no date but 1802-c. 1812]. Parts 1-6 only (of 12) in one volume, 4° (308 x 255mm). Parallel titles and text in French and German. 30 hand-coloured etched plates by Luise von Wangeheim, 1 folding. (The outer blank margin of the folding plate somewhat soiled, light worming to the lower outer corner of the final plate, occasional browning or spotting.) Contemporary half speckled calf, spine gilt with two light blue leather lettering-pieces (some light worming). Provenance: Bibliotheca Lan'cucka (armorial bookplate, early stamp on French title).
A rare work, this sample includes plates and descriptions of 29 varieties and a folding plate of rose-hips from six different varieties. The final 6 parts (published from circa 1812 to 1820) brought the plate total up to 60. The six plate-lists include names in French, Latin and German, with synonyms and occasional English names. In the preface, Rössig states that his aim was to improve upon Mary Lawrance's A Collection of Roses from Nature (London: 1796-1799, see lot 41), which he criticises for its inaccuracies. Although the same criticisms were to be levelled at Rössig, both works helped to prepare the way for the still greater achievments of Redouté and Thory.
