A FINE GEM-SET AND DIAMOND "TULIPE" BROOCH, BY MARTIN KATZ
Martin Katz's fascination with jewelry started at an early age. He was ten when he would visit his aunt in Chicago who had a thriving jewelry business and it was at this formative age that his love affair with gems began. Having graduated from the University of Indiana with a degree in psychology, Katz went straight into the jewelry business where he gained expertise in antique and period jewelry. It was dealing with these vintage works that he became known as "California's jeweler to the stars" and there is clear evidence that the naturalism of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries have been a basis for his inspiration in his own jewelry design. His jewelry has been seen at the Oscars, the Emmy's and the Golden Globe awards adorning stars such as Madonna, Sharon Stone, Angelica Huston, Kim Basinger and Ashley Judd. The tulip pin in this sale is a combination of vibrant color that is so appealing in contemporary jewelry today with the spirit of ancestral jewelry, a simple flower in a three-dimensional design. The bud is constructed so that it becomes detachable and if the desire arose another may be made to vary this elegant form. It is signed, numbered and made in his Paris workshop.
