Lot Essay

This unusual shape reflects the antiquarian taste of Ming collectors, combining the bi-disc (of circular shape) and the gui (a rectangular tablet with a pointed tip), both ceremonial objects used in court rituals since China's early history. This version is further embellished with common decorative motifs of the Ming period, such as the newt-like chi dragons and the pair of cash signifying wealth and success
