Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr. Ineke Wansink of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie for the attribution; Dr. Wansink believes this to be an early work by the artist. A pupil of Willem van Mieris, Van der Mij specialised in such small-scale portraits, examples of which are in the Stedelijk Museum de Lakenhal, Leiden and the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, although the present picture is unusual in its landscape, as opposed to the artist's more normal interior, setting.
