Lot Essay

Justinian Gantz and his father John Gantz (see lot 86) worked as draughtsmen for the East India Company. It is suggested that they may have practised as architects before running a family lithographic press in Popham's Broadway in Madras. They specialized in depicting colonial residences, and in the India Office Library are a number of watercolours by Justinian (see M. Archer, British Drawings in the India Office Library, London, 1969, vol. II, pp. 604-607).
