Lot Essay
Lambert went to India in the service of the East India Company in 1781 but resigned in 1782 to become a merchant and agent in Calcutta, becoming Sheriff of Calcutta by 1792. This portrait was painted in November 1797, and Lambert was charged 1000 sicca rupees (£115) for it. The following year he returned to England.
