gouache heightened with gold on paper, from two wings, ladies and a gentleman overlook a noble who sits smoking a long pipe with a group of female musicians and attendants in a terrace in a courtyard full of water, ships visible in the distance, mounted, framed and glazed - 25.5 x 45cm.

Lot Essay

The figures wear early 18th century costume and the scene is probably based on Lucknow 18th century paintings. However miniatures of Europeans were popular and were executed in Rajesthan as well see: The Eye of the Courtier, Spink Oct 1999, no. 59.
