Lot Essay

In 1922, the artist graduated from the Dong Ba Teachers Training college in Hue and stayed on in the school to take on teaching position. The work which is dated 1929 is an extremely early work of the artist which he used very little colours and adopted a personal style on Van Nam silk, which created a serene composition with dominant grey and brown shades, that the French called "clair-obscur". Phanh Chanh's early works are extremely rare.
